Author/Illustrator Studies

Author studies are a part of the 3rd-5th grade ELA curriculum, and at this time, take place during the last 9-week grading period. The authors suggested in the curriculum are listed below.

NOTE: if you are viewing this page at school & there are big blank spaces below the name of the author you want to look at, it is because the content is blocked by the school filters. You may have to view that content at home. Youtube videos can be uploaded to KUTV by email, and when they're added to our server, they will be available for use at school. Some other blocked content below is written content that could be viewed at home and still be of use in your planning.

Skype an Author Network

There are many authors who will visit classrooms virtually, through Skype, or other free videoconferencing services. In most cases, their fee is considerably less expensive than a face-to-face visit. Many of the authors available to skype are listed on the Skype an Author Network.

"Not knowing what to put down for the next sentence is what my life is all about....that's not writer's block. That's writing."

David Catrow

David Catrow is one of our students' favorite author/illustrators. The quirky, silly style of his illustrations is unique and beguiling. Kids belly laugh at his work, and adults love it too!
Visit Catrow's official web site here!

Below is a short activity book that Catrow created for his fans. There are some fun pictures to color, as well as word searches and crossword puzzles to go along with some of his more popular books.

There are many interesting videos on Catrow's web site. Here is one of them, about how he created Molly Lou Melon, a favorite character of both kids and teachers! You may not be able to watch this one within the district. If you like it or any of the other videos linked on Catrow's site, turn it in to KUTV to be considered for inclusion on our district video channel!

Kevin O'Malley

Kevin O'Malley & Ben Fur, 2008

Kevin O'Malley has long been one of the favorite children's illustrators among our Bobcats! When he visited the school in 2008, it only solidified his popularity! Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude, O'Malley's collaborative story with Carol Heyer & Scott Gotto, is rarely available on the shelves in the Benfer Library, despite our having multiple copies. It's just that funny & accessible to all sorts of students! They go back to it over and over through their elementary years! Another favorite O'Malley picture book is Slugs in Love! Many students and teachers might be most familiar with O'Malley's illustrations for the Miss Malarkey series by Judy Finchler.

O'Malley's official web site is here, and it includes a short video of him with an elementary audience on a school visit, along with biographical information, some very funny pictures of Kevin, and advice about how to write a book and work on getting it published!

Chris Van Allsburg

Visit Chris Van Allsburg's
official site to begin learning about this talented and creative author/illustrator!

Van Allsburg, tells the amazing story about how he almost accidentally won his first Caldecott Honor for The Garden of Abdul Gasazi. At that time, he was actually a sculptor. He states that the first illustration in the book is the 8th or 9th illustration he had ever done in his life. Wow!

NOTE: Don't show the segment about Polar Express on the Reading Rockets site to students without your previewing it first.
Van Allsburg talks about the magic of "believing." In my opinion, you'll want to watch first to see if it's "right" for your kids to watch. ;-) jcc
