Addressing Copyright Issues Today...in a Whole New Way

What is Creative Commons?

From the Creative Commons web site: Creative Commons is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright. We provide free licenses and other legal tools to mark creative work with the freedom the creator wants it to carry, so others can share, remix, use commercially, or any combination

Check out Pennsylvania librarian Joyce Valenza's

Copyright Friendly Pathfinder!

This pathfinder has a wealth of resources, links and information about the ethical use of images, sound, video, text, etc. for students and educators! We couldn't possibly do a more thorough job ourselves, so this is an invaluable link!

Also, check out the ultimate resource
for copyright, fair use and copyleft topics, the Copyright Friendly Wiki!

See the Klein Library Services suggestion pages for Copyright-Friendly Images and Sounds too!

CC Music

For lots of links to music sites that offer Creative Commons licensing, check out Jamie's Delicious bookmarks here. There are over 20 links there to music sites! One of the ones that has been useful to me (jcc) is Magnatune.

In order to ascertain how a site's music is allowed to be used, always be sure to read the licensing information. Be aware that many music sites may have songs available with lyrics that may be inappropriate for children. Sometimes I prefer to stick to instrumental music for that reason. (jcc)

Here's another one:

To SEARCH for Creative Commons licensed work:

Creative Commons SEARCH page

Search for media through Google, Yahoo, Flicker, Blip.tv, OWL Music, or SpinXpress all from one page!

FLICKRSTORM Flickr Creative Commons SEARCH

This is a wonderfully useful tool for educators, since you can search Flickr CC images, place them in your "tray," and have your students link to your tray instead of linking directly to Flickr, which they can't do on our network. The catch: recently, even my photo trays are blocked, so students can't see the photos. There's no way to see if this works at school right now other than to TRY IT!

Here is an example of some pictures that I created a tray for. All these pictures are tagged GREEN...thinking about St. Patty's Day!
